Dell's Vostro 1310 is designed as a compact, low cost business system. In this area it does well with its highly configurable and no frills design. The system is quite large and heavy for a 13.3-inch system and lacks many of the media features that many consumers would like in a laptop.

Last year Dell launched its small business orientated Vostro brand, but at the time its laptop line consisted entirely of repurposed Inspiron machines. This may have sufficed in the short term but if large businesses could benefit from purpose designed laptops in the Latitude range, why not small businesses as well? This was clearly the view taken by Dell and earlier this year it launched a new range of bespoke laptops for its Vostro line.
Superb battery life and good performance at an affordable price make the Vostro 1310 a superb option for the small business in need of portable work horse.

The Vostro 1310 is a decent all-rounder for everyday office tasks and Web surfing, and we reckon it's probably a good buy in its lower specification guise. With the high-end spec that our review machine came with, however, it merely looks like a budget laptop that's trying too hard to make it into the major league.

Small-business owners who would otherwise buy a consumer laptop should consider the full-featured, 13.3-inch Dell Vostro 1310.

Overall, the Dell Vostro 1310 is an impressive budget notebook with clean looks and solid performance. Whether you need a simple business notebook or a budget portable laptop with modest gaming capabilities, the Vostro 1310 makes an excellent choice. That said, the chassis isn't as nice as we hoped ... the edges are sharp and could be smoother or more rounded, the case feels more flimsy than the earlier Vostros, the Touchpad button placement is bad, and the mono speaker does not provide a good audio experience. Still, none of these issues are "deal breakers." The other huge advantage to the Vostro line is the support, lack of Bloatware, and excellent return policy. Dell will let you purchase a Vostro, use it for 30 days, and if you don't like it you can send it back for a full refund without any restocking or shipping fees. That's just amazing. In short, the Vostro 1310 is an excellent addition to the Vostro family and gives business professionals and consumers on a budget a low-cost alternative to the Dell XPS M1330.

The addition of the Dell Vostro 1310 ($1,258 direct) to the Vostro line is almost like bringing a supermodel into a team of geeks. Don't get me wrong—the other Vostros are far from underachievers, but they lack the style and the travel-friendliness that today's small-business users tend to look for. Low prices, multiple configuration options, and a "no-trialware" option should make the Dell Vostro 1310 laptop a start-up favorite.

It's no secret that we weren't that impressed by the Vostro range's debut back in 2007. While dedicated support packages and enhanced next-business-day warranties were certainly attractive extras in their own right, the hardware itself wasn't really designed for the needs of small businesses. It was, in fact, just the familiar Inspiron chassis finished in a more dour and businesslike black. For its new Vostro range, however, Dell has taken the criticisms on board and started entirely from scratch. It's a good thing too, as in addition to the usual 15.4in and 17in models - the 1510 and 1710 - Dell has added a 13.3in laptop to the range, the Vostro 1310.
The 13.3in addition to Dell's recently redesigned Vostro range is an unmitigated success.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is een geïntegreerde (onboard) grafische chip op een Mobile Intel 965GM chipset (voor Merom = Core 2 architectuur). Dit is de opvolger van de GMA 950. De integratie van de volledig programmeerbare pipeline is het interessantste hieraan. Vanwege de integratie van de DirectX9 features, HDR en Hardware Transform & Lighning (T&L) – voorgangers hadden alleen Software T&L – zou hij geschikt moeten zijn voor Windows Vista Premium (ondersteunt Aero Glass volledig). Volgens de gegevens zou de prestatie beduidend beter moeten zijn dan de GMA 950.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

13.3": Dit schermformaat zou een “groot subnotebook-formaat” genoemd kunnen worden. Het voordeel is dat de subnotebook bescheiden afmetingen heeft en deze kan makkelijk vervoerd worden. Het kleine scherm heeft verder het voordeel dat het weinig stroom behoeft wat de batterijlooptijd vergroot en daardoor ook de mobiliteit. Het nadeel is dat het lezen van tekst erg vermoeiend is aan de ogen. Hoge resoluties kunnen nauwelijks gebruikt worden.

2.16 kg: Dit notebook is veel lichter dan de gemiddelde notebook.
Dell: Dell is één van de grootste internationale producenten wat betreft marktaandeel en aantal notebook modellen die in Duits- en Engelssprekende landen getest worden. Een aantal van deze beoordeelde laptops bereiken top plaatsen in total rating en prijs/kwaliteit verhouding.
78.1%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
